Talking To Strangers Is Not So Bad As An Adult

No one likes waiting in line. Most people also don’t like talking to strangers. So it probably sounds a little off to say that talking to strangers while waiting in line is actually enjoyable. In the last year, especially these last few months, I’ve come to notice that strangers are randomly chatting with me, while I’m in line, and surprisingly, I’m loving it.

  1. I’m so with you! I’m a 33 year old male from SF. Here, people pretend that they are extroverts and outgoing, however most people are stuck in their phones and I would say even more socially awkward than I was as a middle-schooler. My fiance is Colombian but she’s very people-shy, so she often is surprised at how easily I can interact with just about anyone in the public. Definitely makes me somewhat of an outcast because not everyone wants to engage with a stranger, but I prefer seeming weird for having interesting chats with strangers than being socially anxious or worse, rude to strangers. I will teach my future kids to be weary of strangers, but also be unafraid to engage with them in a polite and confident manner. I loved this article and will subscribe to read more by you!

    1. Thank you, Ramy. So interested that you used the word outcast. I would think the opposite of you since you sound engaging and inclusive. I love that you want to teach your future children this with a goal of confidence and manners in mind. Thank you for stopping by!

  2. I can’t ever start a conversation. I am so bad at it. Being with my husband is a good thing because he says hi to everyone. Sometimes a simple hi can make a huge difference.

  3. It’s so true what a difference even a compliment from a stranger can make on yours/someone else’s day and how far removed we’ve come from little interactions like that. I really notice it when my phone is in my bag and I’m standing in a public place just looking at every single other person on their phone. Your article really puts it all into perspective. Loved it!

  4. I have a hard time talking to strangers. Partly because I have trust issues. It’s not as bad now that I am older. I remember been told as a child don’t talk to strangers but as an adult you kinda have to talk to strangers lol.
